Gertrude Bell has been a favorite for many years. The biography “Queen of the Desert” was one of the most intriguing books I ever read, and I didn’t want it too end. She got very little credit for her role in redrawing Middle East maps after WWI, archeological discoveries, and diplomacy— being on friendly terms with key Middle East officials as well as the powerful British authorities.
