Tribute to Henrietta Lacks

The recording is available for purchase on Gals Guide Patreon page

Join Gals Guide for a powerful evening honoring Henrietta Lacks’ contributions and reflecting on the important lessons her story continues to teach.

Henrietta’s cancer cells were taken and sold without her consent. Her name was nearly erased as HeLa cells became a foundational tool for modern medicine. Because of Henrietta’s cells, there have been treatments and vaccines for polio, HPV, cancers, and COVID-19. But her family wasn’t told. Her family was not compensated for 70 years.

We have learned more about the human body because of the scientific innovations that HeLa cells provided —but we also learned about the racism and sexism in medical systems. We are still learning about informed consent. Let’s keep learning with empathy front and center. Let’s pay tribute to Henrietta Lacks on what would have been her 106th Birthday.

We are honored to host Dr. Maranda C. Ward to talk about Henrietta Lacks’ story by honoring her as the Mother of Modern Medicine and underscoring the harms of research abuse.

We are honored to host Lopön Karla Jackson-Brewer to lead us in a meditation to be with our breath, ungrasp any tension, and sit with our feelings.

Together we will hold space for a few minutes to pay tribute to the many meaningful ways Henrietta made the world a better place, and how much we still need to correct the injustices that happened to her —and still happen to her family.

Gals Guide Podcast

Back in 2019, Leah talked about the life and immortality of Henrietta Lacks for Gals Guide look into Women in Medicine Month. Even though Henrietta wasn’t a doctor or nurse, because of her, there have been over 74,000 studies that have led to treatments and vaccines for polio, HPV, cancers, and more. In this episode, the Gal Pals also talk about the best things they have done for their own health.
